Jacques Cousteau's grandson introduces vehicle tag to help reefs

KEY WEST, Fla. - The grandson of famed ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau introduced here Tuesday a new Florida license plate designed to boost awareness of coral reef preservation and raise money for reef research.

Philippe Cousteau, 24, showed the new plate featuring a Florida Keys' underwater coral reef scene with the inscription "Protect Our Reefs."

"By buying this plate, people can send the message 'I'm helping to protect America's only living coral barrier reef,'" said Billy Causey, superintendent of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.

The plate can be ordered at county tax office and tag agencies around Florida. Cost is $25, plus a $2 processing fee, higher than the normal tag fee.

Supporters of the new plate hope proceeds from sales will result in a $250,000 windfall for coral reef research and education programs.

Sarasota-based Mote Marine is to receive 37.5 percent of sales, while another 37.5 percent is earmarked for other statewide organizations and programs. The balance is for management and marketing efforts for the plate.
