Mote Marine Laboratory in Key Largo Free Public Visits

The third land-based Keys coral nursery operated by Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium in Key Largo is now open for free public visits for up to 12 people. Fridays at 10 a.m., tours at Reefhouse Resort & Marina are scheduled. You can make reservations at mote.org/KeyLargo. Mote outplants coral along the whole Florida Keys reef tract, producing brain, star, and branching corals both on land and at sea. Carysfort, Grecian Rocks, and French reefs are the main targets of Key Largo’s efforts.

Visitors can take tours of a different Mote satellite land-based coral nursery on Tuesdays at 2 p.m. at Bud ‘N Mary’s Marina in Islamorada. You can make reservations at mote.org/Islamorada. Tuesdays at 10 a.m., Mote gives open tours of the Elizabeth Moore International Center for Coral Reef Research & Restoration on Summerland Key.

Mote Marine Laboratory is a non-profit research organization located in Sarasota, Florida. It was founded in 1955 by Dr. Eugenie Clark, also known as the “Shark Lady,” and is dedicated to advancing the understanding and conservation of marine ecosystems and species. Mote has several locations, including a campus on Summerland Key in the Florida Keys. The Key Largo location is known as the Tropical Research and Education Center (TREC) and is a field station of Mote that focuses on research and education related to the marine and coastal environments of South Florida and the Caribbean.
