Checking in at Bahia Honda State Park

Bahia Honda State Park is making a graceful comeback following Hurricane Irma. The park was in the path of the dreadful northeast quadrant of the powerful Category 4 storm that devastated the Florida Keys in September 2017.

Although much of the native vegetation perished in the storm, the trees and plants that survived are growing and flowering. The wildlife has returned to this historic park: we’ve seen Great Egrets, Great White Herons, Osprey, Magnificent Frigatebirds, Pelicans, and Fritillary Butterflies.

The gulfside Calusa Beach is open and as beautiful as before Irma. The walking path to the top of the Historic Overseas Railroad Bridge is clear, and the views from the top are magnificent. If you look carefully to the northeast, you can see the 7-mile bridge on the horizon.

Although services are limited, there are ready campsites, clean restrooms, freshwater rinse-off showers, and beach equipment rentals available.
