On January 29, 2004 a block (the pulley portion of "block & tackle") historically used for hoisting supplies to the upper levels of the Carysfort Lighthouse was returned to the Upper Region office after undergoing a 124-day conservation. Mr. James Levy, Historic Conservator from The Florida Department of State's Research and Conservation Laboratory started work on the block in September 2003. Since the block was a composite of wood and metal it had to be carefully disassembled and processed as individual pieces. First lighted in 1852, Carysfort is the oldest iron screwpile lighthouse still functioning in the United States. The lighthouse lies within the Existing Management Area of the Key Largo National Marine Sanctuary and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984 for its significance in Engineering, Transportation, Commerce and Maritime History. The block has been dated between 1850-1875 and is now a permanent part of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary's Heritage Assets. The block is on display in the FKNMS Upper Region office. 95230 Overseas Highway, Key Largo, Fl 33037 |
