logo_kwmag.gifAfter just one year in business, Key West’s locally owned and operated Key West Magazine won seven awards at the 2007 Charlie Awards Ceremony presented by the Florida Magazine Association (FMA) last week. The awards ceremony, which took place in Orlando on August 25, honored the best magazines in Florida.

Key West Magazine took home two First Place Charlie Awards, one for Best Public Service Coverage, for its 2006 Hurricane Special Issue, “The Rescuers,” and another for Best Feature for “Dennis the Menace,” the magazine’s January, 2007 profile of local tabloid publisher and muckraker Dennis Cooper. Key West Magazine also won a silver or second place, Charlie Award for Best In-Depth Reporting for the feature article “The Fabulist,” an in-depth profile of local filmmaker Quincy Perkins. The FMA also awarded Key West Magazine four Bronze, or third place, Charlie Awards for “Best Overall Magazine” in Florida “Best Overall Designed Magazine,” “Best Overall Written Magazine,” and another bronze for “Best In-Depth Reporting” for “Dennis the Menace”.

“When you consider that all the issues we submitted to the FMA for judging were all published in our startup year of business,” said Bill Semich, Editor and Publisher of Key West Magazine, “this is an astounding number of awards for our little magazine, operating here on a tiny island, with just a few hardworking and dedicated local staff, to have achieved so soon”. “With these awards”, said Semich, “the FMA has publicly acknowledged that Key West Magazine ranks among the highest quality publications in the state”.

Other Florida magazines to win Charlies this year included Islands magazine, Florida International magazine, Sarasota magazine, Boca Raton magazine, Gulfshore Life magazine, and Florida Travel and Life magazine.

Editor and Publisher Bill Semich conceived and launched Key West Magazine from his Old Town home in 2006. Key West Magazine, along with its sister publication, Duval Street - The Only Complete Visitors’ Guide to Key West - now operate out of offices at 513 Fleming Street.
