5. Barefoot in the keys

Some say the best thing about Miami is the road leading out of it, because that road leads to the laid-back Florida Keys, a string of gorgeous islands laced together by 175km of bridges and causeways.

Known as the American Caribbean, the Keys offer a perfect carefree road trip.

Rent a car, pack an Esky, throw on your beach gear and set off. First stop: Key Largo for world-class diving and snorkelling. Sport fishing enthusiasts will fall hook, line and sinker for Islamorada, a popular spot for bonefishing.

Despite its name, visitors aren’t required to do anything more taxing than lift a cocktail in Marathon, known as the heart of the Florida Keys.

At the end of the causeway is Key West, the southernmost point in the continental US. Ernest Hemingway wrote some of his best works here, and today visitors can tour his former home.

Key West is the kind of chilled beach town where the seafood on your plate at dinner was caught that afternoon, shoes are optional, and sunsets are spectacular.
